As we walked into the office this morning, we went past a shop cooking food. Carolyn remarked, “Ooh, that reminds me of the smell of Grapevine (One Event / Awaken).” It is that smell of food cooked in the open air that brought a reminder. Our senses can evoke memories, whether that be a smell, a taste, a sound, an object, or a sensation. Those memories can take us back in time, perhaps to childhood and remind us of pleasure or pain from our past. In Psalm 77, the psalmist is seeking God in a time of trouble, and in v.6 he says, ‘I remembered my songs in the night.’ His thoughts have gone back to the songs of praise he sang to the Lord. From there he is reminded of God’s faithfulness in the past and knows that, because he is a faithful God, he will be faithful again to his servant. When we are facing times of trouble or discouragement, it is good to remember God’s faithfulness
and to sing the songs of worship that affirm his love and goodness to us.
God bless.
